ICE Air Units at NASCAR San Diego: What It Means for Immigrants

Federal agents with surveillance helicopters and patrol boats surrounded a NASCAR race in San Diego this weekend — and they made clear this is how they operate every day. CBP's Air and Marine Operations deployed advanced aircraft and vessels at Naval Base Coronado on June 19–21, 2026, calling it a routine extension of their border security mission. For immigrants living in or visiting the San Diego area, that framing matters.

ICE Air Units at NASCAR San Diego: What It Means for Immigrants

Federal immigration enforcement agents were on full display at a major public event in San Diego this week. CBP's Air and Marine Operations (AMO) — the air and sea enforcement arm of U.S. Customs and Border Protection — deployed helicopters and patrol vessels around Naval Base Coronado for the NASCAR Cup Series Anduril 250 race, held June 19–21, 2026. The agency described the operation as part of its everyday border security mission.

What AMO Actually Did at the Race

AMO sent A-Star and UH-60 helicopters equipped with surveillance cameras and real-time video systems. Those cameras streamed live footage to command centers and partner law enforcement agencies on the ground. AMO also deployed multiple patrol boats to secure the waters around Naval Base Coronado. The agency said the goal was to protect race participants, fans, and military personnel — not to conduct immigration arrests. However, AMO's stated everyday mission includes border enforcement, which can involve detaining people who are in the country without legal status.

AMO Southwest Region Executive Director Hunter Robinson said the event showed how the agency uses its technology and partnerships with local police. "Our advanced technology platform, combined with seamless interoperability with local law enforcement agencies, enables us to deliver unparalleled security for events like this," Robinson said. The presence of federal agents with surveillance aircraft at a large public gathering is a reminder that immigration enforcement and general law enforcement now often operate side by side at major events.

What to Do If You Are Near a Federal Enforcement Operation

  • Know your rights before you go anywhere near a federal checkpoint or operation. You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status from any officer, including CBP or ICE agents.
  • Do not run or resist. Lawyers strongly advise staying calm. Running or resisting can lead to additional criminal charges on top of any immigration issue.
  • Carry a Know Your Rights card. Many nonprofit immigration organizations offer free cards in multiple languages that explain what to say — and what not to say — if stopped by federal agents.
  • If you are detained, ask for an immigration lawyer immediately. You have the right to contact an attorney. If you cannot afford one, ask for a list of free legal services. Do not sign any documents before speaking with a lawyer.

The presence of CBP Air and Marine Operations at a public event does not automatically mean immigration arrests will happen — but it does mean federal agents with border enforcement authority are nearby. If you are stopped, you have the right to remain silent and the right to refuse consent to a search; invoking those rights clearly and calmly is critical. Anyone in removal proceedings or with an unresolved immigration case should consult an immigration attorney before attending large events where federal agencies are operating.
