ICE Arrests Undocumented Truck Driver in Virginia: What It Means
A Brazilian man was arrested by ICE on Interstate 81 in Virginia after agents found him driving a large commercial truck without the required license. What happened on I-81 in Virginia
On May 27, 2026, ICE's Homeland Security Investigations office in Harrisonburg, Virginia, arrested Lins Dos Santos-Melo, an undocumented immigrant from Brazil. Agents stopped him during enforcement operations on Interstate 81. Dos Santos-Melo had a valid Massachusetts driver's license, but he did not have a commercial driver's license (CDL) — the special license required by law to operate large trucks and trailers.
Acting ICE Director David J. Venturella said in a statement that operating a vehicle of that size without proper training puts other drivers at risk. ICE said Dos Santos-Melo had no legal right to remain in the United States and no legal authority to drive that vehicle. Massachusetts allows all residents — regardless of immigration status — to get a standard driver's license under the Work and Family Mobility Act, which took effect in 2023.
