$6 Million in Fake FIFA Merchandise Stopped at Houston Port

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Area Port of Houston/Galveston seized over $6 million worth of counterfeit merchandise tied to the FIFA World Cup 2026. Officers found approximately 12,000 fake Adidas soccer jerseys, 4,500 counterfeit FIFA soccer balls, nearly 4,400 pairs of athletic shoes, and over 2,200 fake Apple watches and earbuds carrying the FIFA trademark logo. Toys and perfumes were also part of the haul. Most shipments came from China and were headed to locations inside and outside the United States.

CBP said it used intelligence and past trend analysis to target this operation — the same approach it uses before major events like the Super Bowl. The agency focused on people and businesses that receive shipments of goods that break intellectual property rights (IPR) laws. These are laws that protect trademarks and copyrights owned by companies like FIFA and Apple. CBP Area Port Director Thomas Mahn warned that criminal networks are "very deceptive" in scamming sports fans and harming American consumers and businesses.

For immigrants living in the US, this matters beyond just losing money on a bad product. Receiving or reselling counterfeit goods can lead to serious legal trouble. Knowingly buying, selling, or distributing fake trademarked items is a federal crime. A criminal conviction — even a minor one — can affect your immigration status, including your green card application, work permit (EAD), or naturalization process. CBP noted that over 90% of counterfeit seizures happen through international mail and small e-commerce packages, meaning many buyers may not even realize what they ordered is fake.

What to Do

  • Buy only from trusted, official sources. If you want FIFA World Cup 2026 merchandise, buy directly from official retailers or the FIFA website. Prices that seem too good to be true usually mean the product is fake.
  • Do not resell items you received from unknown online sellers. If you already received a suspicious package, do not sell or distribute the items. Lawyers recommend stopping all activity with those goods immediately and speaking with an attorney.
  • If you are contacted by CBP or law enforcement about a shipment, do not ignore it. In these situations, people usually benefit from speaking with an immigration lawyer before responding to any government agency, especially if they are in removal proceedings or have a pending green card application.
  • Report suspected counterfeit goods. You can report violations to the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center at iprcenter.gov or by calling 1-866-IPR-2060.

Receiving counterfeit goods does not automatically trigger immigration consequences, but knowingly selling or distributing them can lead to a federal criminal charge — and any criminal conviction can be used against you in immigration court or during a green card or citizenship application. If CBP contacts you about a shipment, you have the right to remain silent and to consult an attorney before making any statements. I strongly recommend speaking with an immigration lawyer before responding to any government inquiry related to this type of seizure.
