El Paso Stash House Raid: 12 Arrested in Smuggling Bust

Agents Raid El Paso Stash House, Find 12 People Inside

On May 27, 2026, U.S. Border Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) — a federal agency that investigates cross-border crimes — raided a stash house in El Paso, Texas. A stash house is a location used by smuggling networks to hide people being moved illegally across the border. Agents found 11 adults and one unaccompanied child inside. Ten of the adults were from Mexico and two were from Guatemala.

Agents located the house using information gathered from a previous smuggling investigation. All 12 people were taken to the Ysleta Border Patrol Station. The 11 adults were charged under Title 8 of the U.S. Code — the federal law that covers immigration violations. The one unaccompanied minor (a child traveling without a parent or guardian) was processed separately under a different administrative procedure. All individuals were later moved to the Processing Transport Detention Unit. The investigation is still ongoing.

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jessie Munoz said the operation was part of a broader effort to dismantle criminal smuggling organizations in the region. HSI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Ryan McRae added that the joint operation reflects a continued commitment to protecting communities from human smuggling networks. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is asking the public to report suspicious activity anonymously by calling 1-800-635-2509.

What This Means If You or Someone You Know Is Detained

Being arrested in or near a stash house — even if you were brought there by smugglers — can lead to removal proceedings (the official legal process to deport someone). If you are placed in removal proceedings, you have the right to appear before an immigration judge and, in many cases, to apply for protection such as asylum. Acting quickly matters: deadlines in immigration court are strict, and missing them can hurt your case.

What to Do

  • Contact an immigration lawyer immediately if you or a family member is detained. Many nonprofit organizations offer free or low-cost legal help. Ask for a list of free legal services at the detention facility.
  • Do not sign any documents you do not understand. Signing a voluntary departure or removal order without legal advice may waive important rights.
  • If you are an asylum seeker, tell the officer clearly that you fear returning to your home country. This is called expressing a fear of return, and it starts a separate legal process that may protect you from immediate deportation.
  • If a child you know is unaccompanied, contact the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) or a legal aid organization. Unaccompanied minors have specific legal protections under U.S. law.

Anyone detained in connection with a stash house raid — even as a victim of smuggling, not an organizer — can be placed in removal proceedings immediately. However, being a trafficking or smuggling victim may qualify you for specific protections, including a T visa (for trafficking victims) or asylum, depending on your circumstances. You have the right to request an immigration court hearing before a judge, and you should invoke that right before signing any removal paperwork. Consult an immigration attorney before making any statements or agreements with authorities.
