Migrants Locked in Freight Cars: What Smugglers Don't Tell You

What if the deadline has already passed — not a legal deadline, but the moment when you could still turn back? For migrants who trusted smugglers near the Del Rio sector this summer, that moment came and went before they ever reached the border. Between August 30 and September 16, 2026, U.S. Border Patrol agents found groups of migrants locked inside autorack freight cars — the kind used to transport automobiles — at the same rail siding near Knippa, Texas, four separate times.

Four incidents. One death. The same rail siding.

On August 30, agents rescued eight people, including a child, from a locked autorack car. On September 7, three more were pulled from an identical situation. Then, on September 11, agents found two individuals locked inside another car — one of them was already dead. Homeland Security Investigations is handling that case. The most recent rescue came just before dawn on September 16, when a Border Patrol canine alerted agents to a stationary freight train during a routine inspection. Inside, they found four people — three Mexican nationals and one Chinese national — locked in with no way to escape. All four were taken to the Uvalde Border Patrol Station for processing.

Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony "Scott" Good described the pattern plainly: "Doors on freight cars are locked externally, and migrants are trapped for an indefinite amount of time without food or water." He called the people responsible "criminal alien smugglers who have no regard for human life." The freight cars offer no ventilation controls, no emergency exit, and no way to signal for help. Temperatures inside metal rail cars in South Texas in late summer can reach life-threatening levels within hours.

What smugglers promise — and what actually happens

Smuggling networks often tell migrants they will be transported safely and quickly. The reality documented at this single rail siding over 21 days tells a different story: at least 17 people locked in metal boxes, one person dead, and a child among those rescued. People who use smugglers also face serious immigration consequences — being caught in removal proceedings, losing the ability to apply for asylum, or being barred from future legal entry.
